Liven up Forum
I think not being able to 'lurk' and see posts is a disadvantage. If you go to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] or the resurrected my-mc [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] then at least you can see what is being posted. I think this in turn can encourage interested visitors to register, login and add their own contributions. If you can't see it in the first place then I think it fails to encourage use.
Having to login before seeing anything means that casual visits by club members is discouraged. You have to remember the login. I have so many that I now use lastpass to keep my login details. The question then is do you only allow club members to contribute? All-in-all not an easy one to resolve.

On st-qwners you still have to log in Derek but as you say you can then see everything thats being posted or discussed by scrolling through, just thought a chat room may be beneficial and encourage people on to discus problems in real time instead of having to wait weeks for an answer to a post

Chatroom
Other than for technical support reasons I have never used a chat room facility. It assumes others are also logged-in of course. I don't know if we have enough interested people to make that viable, but worth thinking about. I wonder if a chat facility is available with this forum system?

Re: SILENCE IS NOT GOLDEN
I think the way to get membership a forum its to make it free.
I've heard this forum costs quite a bit. I also participate in aanother club and on that we run Invision Board very successfully.
It's easy to navigate and manage in house.
Dare I also suggest that membership to the club should free. On the other club I'm active in we over 4000 members and operate a sponsorship by a parts supplier - they donate about £150 for the year and we always have surplus.
All committee members do their job for free myself included.

Re: SILENCE IS NOT GOLDEN
Membership to this forum is free.
However the forum has been set up by the committee specifically for the use of the Pan-Clan membership. That isn't free as the club attracts considerable running costs, the magazine being it's greatest.
It is open for debate as to whether the forum should be opened up to non Pan-Clan members, however that debate is to NOT to take place on the forum (unless otherwise endorsed to do so by the committee).
If it is to be debated/discussed then the membership should take the issue directly to the committee.

Re: SILENCE IS NOT GOLDEN
Sorry I posted this now I was only trying to generate some interest as to how we could open up more meaningful discussions and answers to problems in real time possibly as opposed to emails but I now feel somewhat like a school boy who has just been given six of the best by the headmaster, surely as pointed out this forum is run for the membership who have paid their subs (and dont mind doing so) so that we can express our opinions without fear of reprisols or six of the best ok somebody did express their opinion as to costs but is that not the freedom of speach that we value in this country and does the committee not act on behalf of the membership as opposed to dictating to the membership. Just MY opinion but will probably get another six at least it cold outside to cool the hands down.

Re: SILENCE IS NOT GOLDEN
With regard to this comment from admin. Firstly may I remind you that this forum area is only accessible to the membership for comment so the discussions reflect the thoughts of the members only. Surely the point of this forum is to allow full and open discussion on whatever subject without censorship (obviously avoiding offensive or libellous comments). By discussion amongst the members we form a consensus of opinion which can then be taken to the committee where appropriate. It seems to me that rather than censoring the forum the committee should monitor it to discover the topics that are important to the members. It is ridiculous to suggest that we need permission from the committee before having a discussion on the forum. Come on admin, wise up!Admin wrote:Membership to this forum is free.

Re: SILENCE IS NOT GOLDEN
The comment was not intended to censor but as admin issues regarding any constitution change or change of rules for the forum would need to go through the committee. I have seen forum's degenerate into argument in the past over much smaller topics and I am conscious that this one won't.
I feel the committee are the same, hence why the forum requires real names and not nicknames.
I have no problem with any topic being discussed but if they need the committee to be aware (and not all are members here, or use the forum regularly) then it should go to them first. If the committee are happy for it to be discussed here then that's up to them.
The was neither intended to 'tell any one off' but designed as a general reminder. You both make valid points and I feel these need to go to your area rep/committee member accordingly is all.

Forum
I suppose the people who are motivated/inclined to use a forum will see this discussion. I have asked Don Morley for an agenda item in the next club committee meeting 1st Feb 2013 to be about the forum and how it can best be used by members. Getting some regular interesting contributions is part of what makes a forum worth visiting. If we are not getting much by way of contributions then the work of getting this forum up-and-running is wasted which seems to me to be a shame.
SO, let's think about how we can get more people participating and contributing.
Suggestions please....

Re: SILENCE IS NOT GOLDEN
I must admit i was disappointed to see how empty the forum was when i joined the club and it would be very nice to see more activity. on other forums it always seems to be a small number of really active people that lead it roughly 5 or so who have hundreds/thousands of posts and it turns into quite a community and an almost instant source of information. Most of the posts are crap just to induce conversation in the general chat like news reports or opinions on happenings it would make up roughly 75% of the posts but they keep people conversing and coming back to the forums in turn you will get the odd issue posted.
I would be great to figure out a way to promote forum use. if i get time i may post a guide to swingarm replacement. it will probably be sketchy but it will certainly attract comments from other more experienced Pan owners offering advice.

Also it may be an idea to put those witten guides as stickies in forum sections instead. it would be another reason to attract people to the forums

'Stickies'
Hi Thady. A good thought to have some 'sticky' sections for certain types of posts such as technical articles. Oh, and WELCOME to the club.

Pictures?
Hi everyone this topic seems to of got a few people going . I found the forum somewhat lacking in general. please could someone tell me how to get a series of jpeg photos onto a post easily as I am no IT technition (nor can I spell ). I am sure that seeing other peoples work , their pride and joy, all the little fixes and differing ways of going about different tasks, would bring more debate, interest, and a general feeling of wanting to log on and partisipate no matter how large or small each contribution. A picture paints a thousand words. So if there is some one out there that is like minded
then lets hear what you have to say...........................

If you look at the series of buttons at the top of the text box when you are posting one ( a few right from the center) is a button that looks like a picture. it gives you an option to insert a link.. i'll test with this post to make sure i aint talking rubbish
host your pic on flickr etc and right click the image and copy URL or copy the link in address bar and place the link in the little pop up box
My mac gives me the option to copy image url not sure about pc. you will get something that looks like this :- ( spaces to show link without it turning into a picture)

though it would appear that you need to select a picture appropriate for the forum size

Re: SILENCE IS NOT GOLDEN
Hi
Thought I would post my views as a recently rejoined member.
It was stated above that the forum was set up for the benefit of members only. However in it's current state it doesn't really achieve that goal, because its like tumblweed central in here, i.e. very few posts. If it was to be opened to the public, then there would be many more posts, more useful information, and more Pan owners to consult when we need advice. And a possible increase in membership as a result (especially if there was a small members only section).
The other thing that seems to be missing is historical posts e.g. no 'ST1100 Specific' section posts before Jan 20!2. There must have at one time been a huge amount of useful information, now not available. Keep it like this and it will never get better. The other forums are just so much better - why waste time coming to a forum where nobody posts?
Anyway that's my view. Hope it helps. Cheers.

If you check you find this forum was only created in Dec 2011 hence no historical posts before thenJames Hubbard wrote:The other thing that seems to be missing is historical posts e.g. no 'ST1100 Specific' section posts before Jan 20!2.

Ah! That would explain it then :-)
I assumed it had been going for longer than that as I know the Pan Clan has been going for many years now.

Re: SILENCE IS NOT GOLDEN
As a new member I have to say that this thread does kind of hit the nail on the head. I put a thread on introducing myself as a new member, 24 vews and not one 'hello' in return, not exactly the warm welcome I was hoping for or have had from previous owners forums.
I know there's the FB page which is very active, (and I did get some hellos on there) but not really the place for discussions and such like.
As the original poster stated, the thread moaning about no duscussion and lack of use, appears to have generated the most responses !!
Just my 2 penneth as a newbie :-)

Hi Ian & welcome, yep you have hit the nail on the head.
I only look in occasionally and the lack of input is disappointing. There are a number of really good Pan/ST forums out there, you just need to find the ones that suit you. The main thing is to enjoy your Pan, there are a great many people out there who are doing just that. There's a huge amount of social Pan chat and advice on line but finding it is the issue. It's not appropriate to make suggestions here but please do drop me a message if you want some directions.
